In this lecture, I use Talia Abu's concept of guilt as a tool for a critical, genealogical approach to historiography and narrative to guide us into an analysis of a passage from Finnegans Wake. In this passage (240.24-35), Shem attempts to revitalize his social reputation and status as a lamb of God by renaming himself and attempting to turn himself into a prophet. But, as is typical of FW, this project is wrought with contradictions in what it means to be a prophet, acceptable, normal, etc, and as a result we get a rather comedic image of an overly hairy goat attempting to become a sheep through the transfigurative act of a haircut.
